Porcelain Veneers
The ultimate "make-over" for your teeth! Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are permanently bonded to the front of your teeth. This procedure is not just for actors and models - American dentists place tens of thousands of veneers each year in the mouths of average persons who just want to look good.
Veneers can correct chipped, crooked, discolored and gapped teeth. They can sometimes replace braces for patients requiring only minor tooth movement. The porcelain is very durable and resistant to staining and can be cared for like normal teeth. Veneers can be expected to last a decade or longer.
Patients seeking this type of treatment should begin with a consultation appointment. The dentist must decide what cosmetic changes are needed in your mouth. He or she will likely take photos of your teeth and smile. This is the time to make your desires known to the dentist. If you feel that you and the dentist are not communicating well, do not proceed.
At the next visit, the dentist will anesthetize your teeth (although in some cases this is not necessary) and remove a thin layer of enamel from the front of your teeth. He or she will then make an impression of your teeth. You both will then choose a shade for your new veneers. Sometimes the dentist will use composite resin to make temporary "veneers" that are lightly bonded to your teeth. These protect the teeth while the porcelain veneers are being made.
The veneers themselves are made at a dental laboratory. The dentist sends the lab the impressions, photos and a detailed description of the desired final effect. At the final visit, the dentist will remove the temporary veneers and affix the porcelain ones to your teeth with resin cement.
